SCENES - remembered, imagined and actual scenes from Films

Sat 19th Oct 2019

Soraya Smithson’s ceramic interpretation of Billy Wilder’s 1959 romantic comedy, Some Like It Hot uses the window recesses of Newlyn Art Gallery’s Picture Room to create a theatrical restaging of the film using handmade ceramic objects to represent the narrative. The transparency of film is exchanged for the solidity of ceramics, their thingness means they occupy space and become votive offerings to love, friendship, hope, desire, ambition, the past, the future.

The film has a special resonance for Soraya as her father was on set for the shooting of the sleeper carriage scene.

Rotten Tomatoes review: "Some Like It Hot: A spry, quick-witted farce that never drags"
